Whiplash is an injury to the neck caused by the sudden movement of the head backward, forward, or sideways. It is most commonly received when riding in a car that is struck from behind or that collides with another object. When the head is suddenly jerked back and forth beyond its normal limits, the supportive muscle and ligaments of the neck and upper back can be overstretched or torn. The soft cushioning discs between the spinal bones may also be damaged. The spinal bones often are forced out of position reducing normal motion and causing nerve irritation and pain.

The resulting injury to the spine and soft tissues can lead to symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, pain in the shoulders, arms and hands, reduced neck motion, and even lower back pain. Symptoms may not appear for several weeks as your body attempts to adapt. Vehicles are designed to absorb much of the energy from a collision but our bodies have limits. Even minor accidents can cause significant injury. It is always important to have a complete chiropractic evaluation after an accident to make sure that your spine has not been damaged. It cannot be replaced like a bumper or turn signal. Your automobile insurance has 100% coverage for injuries that result from accidents.
