Cervical Pillows for Neck Support

Last week a patient asked me how  the odd looking pillows in my  waiting room worked to reduce neck pain. As I started to explain how the shape of the pillow supports the proper curve of the neck, I thought this would be a great topic for this weeks blog.

Cervical pillows are actually considered a orthopedic support, because they have the ability over time, to change the alignment of the vertebrae in your neck and change the contour of your cervical spine. When you consider that the average adult spends 8 hours a day,
or 1/3 of their lives asleep, this creates an excellent opportunity for structural change.

We generally prescribe these pillow supports for people with headaches, neck pain, arm pain and  numbness, upper back pain, shoulder pain and sleep disorders including snoring.

Your neck should have a forward curve. Car accidents and other traumatic injuries as well as chronic poor posture while working at your desk or on a computer, can flatten or even reverse this normal curve causing the previously mentioned  symptoms.

Our office carries three different styles of cervical pillows. We have petite and regular size fiberfill pillows, an adjustable memory foam pillow and a water filled pillow. These options allow us to provide you with the very best support possible.
