Shoulder Injuries
This is the time of the year that we seem to see more injuries involving the shoulder, due to car accidents and slips and falls on the icy roads, sidewalks and stairs.
When you think about it, your car is more than a ton of tough steel, resilient rubber and the latest miracle plastics, yet you've seen what looks like a minor collision can do to your car. So you can just imagine what that same collision can do to you, the unprotected human ridding inside. Your seatbelt and shoulder harness are essential to improving your safety but can also cause shoulder and chest injuries from the force caused by sudden impacts.
Slips and near falls on the ice can also cause muscle, ligament and cartilage injuries involving your shoulders. Many times injuries are caused by an attempt to catch yourself, rather than an actual fall to the ground.
While the shoulder is the most movable joint in the body, it is also one of the most unstable. The shoulder is unlike other joints in the body, as it is not a true ball and socket like the more stable hip joint. The shoulder is much more like a golf ball and tee, where the ball can easily slip off due to muscle, tendon and ligament injuries.
Most shoulder injuries can be treated conservatively by a chiropractor with out surgery. Manipulation of the joint to its proper position
allows the muscles and ligaments, that hold the joint together, to heal properly. We also use acupuncture or physiotherapy to help it heal faster. Untreated shoulder injuries can lead to more severe problems like dislocations, tendonitis, bursitis, torn rotator cuffs, and arthritis.
If you are having problems like this, the sooner you contact us for an examination, the better.
